DuPont introduced Energain™ separators, based on nanofiber science, for high performance lithium ion batteries used in all types of electric vehicles, grid storage and renewable energy applications such as photovoltaic solar arrays and wind.
The DuPont™ Energain™ separator is made from a proprietary, polyimide-based polymer produced using a spinning process that resulting in continuous filaments with diameters between 200 and 1,000 nanometers. This polymer provides a unique offering for energy storage, where it can significantly improve the safety, durability, power and energy performance in a variety of capacitor and battery applications.
Energain™ battery separators boost energy efficiency and storage performance to reduce the use of fossil fuels and meet the growing demand for hybrid and electric vehicles. In addition, Energain™ battery separators can increase power from 15 percent to 30 percent, increase battery life by up to 20% and improve safety by providing stability at high temperatures, so consumers can drive longer on a single charge and reach their desired speed more quickly and safely. For automobile and battery manufacturers, more battery power can reduce the number of batteries typically required in today’s hybrid and electric vehicles.
DuPont™ Energain™ separators have shown improved power capability that can deliver improved performance with the same number of batteries or reducing the number of batteries needed. Typical hybrid vehicles contain between 50 and 70 batteries; plug-in electric vehicles have 80 to more than 200; and fully electric vehicles carry 150+.
What sets DuPont technology apart is proven results for delivering higher power, better wetting for electrolytes, low shrinkage and high temperature stability for improving the safety of high performing automotive batteries.
While the primary applications for Energain™ separators are lithium ion batteries for hybrid and electric vehicles, the technology also will be targeted for batteries in renewable energy, specialty consumer applications, including laptops, cell phones and power tools, among others. Additional products in the portfolio will target a broad range of liquid filtration applications for the biopharmaceutical, microelectronics, food and beverage industries, offering superior retention, filter life and flow resistance.
