Building Innovations is the first DuPont business to be completely landfill-free: no landfill waste is generated as a result of by-products from the manufacture of Corian®, Zodiaq®, Tyvek® and DuPont™ Landscaping Products.
Building Innovations began a three year effort to go from 81 million pounds of landfill in 2008 to zero landfill by the end of 2011 with all by-products to be re-used or recycled.
Building Innovations will realize $2.2 million in revenue in 2011 from the sale of waste by-products globally as well as $400,000 in cost savings. We estimate another $2 million worth of Building Innovations’ first grade product could be sold globally in 2012 due to the positioning that the Drive to Zero program will demonstrate to our customers.
The achievements were accomplished with no capital expenditures. To accomplish this, a global Six Sigma project was initiated and project teams were formed to help (15) DuPont locations and third party partners to achieve a zero landfill run rate. The project was particularly unique in working with third party manufacturing partners who often make products for other companies and deal with challenges to get both DuPont and unrelated product production landfill waste to zero.
This project provided clear thought leadership around the issue of sustainability among our customers and stakeholders, including the U.S. government and some municipalities in which we operate.
